Fishers' Loft is an Inn overlooking the ocean in Port Rexton in Eastern Newfoundland.

This near five star location attracts international travelers and local visitors alike. And with good reason. It's like stepping back into the 1860's, with all the amenities of the new millennium.

John Fisher feels that while the location and buildings set the ambience, the people that work at the Inn make it special.

Most of the staff have family histories that date back over a hundred years in Newfoundland. So there are a lot of interesting stories to tell!

In 2000, Canada's accomodation industry had a gross margin of 13%. Labour was the largest single expenditure, representing almost one third of total revenues.

Currently Fishers' Loft Inn operates 6 months of the year and they are aiming to go to eight.

Their clientele is approximately 50 percent local and the remaining from all over the world.

John likens the management skills he and many others bring to a home business as that of a jet engine powering a kite.

The Fishers' Loft Inn take off success is exemplary of the guidance offered by many highly trained professionals who - for a variety of reasons - are starting home businesses.

In 2000, room fees generated only 59% of total revenues, the rest coming from food, drink and other related services.

John does advise, however, that you do your research prior to starting a business, in particular a bed and breakfast.
