Lucie
Létourneau first heard about hemp during
related regulation changes in the 1990s.
Soon after, Canolio Inc was born.
Lucie
started making soaps and skin-care products
in her kitchen. She has since expanded across
Canada and into Europe.
Hemp
is from the same family as cannabis, but
it has a weaker level of THC, so it doesn't
possess the same euphoric effects.
Hemp
has been used for centuries to create a
range of natural products, but the general
public still knows little of its potential
and benefits.
Gradually
however, it has been resurfacing on the
market, in particular due to its environmentally
friendly attributes.
Hemp
can be harvested up to three times a year.
But anyone wishing to grow it must conform
to strict guidelines before they're granted
an operating permit.

Lucie
works closely with a Quebec Hemp farmer,
who ensures the highest quality hemp seed.
Canolio contracts out most of their product
production to certified laboratories. They
also have sales representatives who ensure
the products reach the store shelves.
Lucie
has no doubts as to the durability of hemp
fiber. During the harvesting of the first
crop in 1999, the combine overheated trying
to process the hardy plants. Subsequent
to her first crop, Lucie has added nutritional
products to her skincare line under the
term Nutraceutical. This refers to
a health food which is nutritionally balanced,
high in dietary fiber and low in fat.

Lucie
says that if the company continues to do
well, she'll be able to hold business meetings
someplace warmer than Montreal.
