Antigonish may or may not ring any bells for you but this small town in Nova Scotia is the base for start up home biz TLM Design Studio.

Owner/operator Tracey MacKinnion completed a 3 year Interior design program and worked for a small design firm in Halifax for a year before opening her business in Antiganish, where her husband's family business is located.

One of TLM's biggest job is a residential renovation in Cape Breton in which every interior wall in house is being moved.

The home improvement market has been growing by more than 8% a year for the last 10 years.

Another job on the go is a residential kitchen in a 150 year old house in which absolutely nothing is level, presenting special challenge in design and construction. It can be quite time consuming.

3 out of 10 designers are self-employed. This ratio is higher than in other professional and related occupations.

One of the keys to succeeding as a start-up entrepreneur is to find a good mentor, which is exactly what Tracey did. She received invaluable advice from the only other interior designer in Antigonish. Talk about friendly competition!

Tracey's very busy and is going to be even busier with a baby on the way and even more projects coming up!
