N' Sons Kennels sinks its teeth into the
pet care market.
If
you're considering a renovation on your
house and want to earn a little extra cash
to pay for it, why not start a dog kennel
that also takes in cats. That's what the
Hutchinsons did in the mid-nineties. They've
put their acreage to good use with several
dog runs, grooming services and very comfortable
facilities for their guests.
Total
spending on pets in Canada tops $1 billion
per year including $412 million on pet food
alone.

Really
being there for the clients sometimes involves
turning part of the kennel into a maternity
ward for expectant pets.
On
more than a few occasions, puppies start
popping up and Trudy is called upon for
some unofficial canine midwifery. It's a
full service kennel.

When
the Hutchinsons started up, their bank would
not provide any financing for the business
so they had to look around to access the
start up capital. They
got advice on financial issues and start
up information from their local federally
funded Community Futures Development Corporation,
which provides assistance and resources
for rural areas in Saskatchewan.

The
average Canadian spends $300 per year to
feed and care for each of their household
pets.
